Everyone pitched in recently to help make pickles! Our friend Jenn and her kids were visiting, and with the help of our young cucumber gatherers, we made a giant batch of delicious pickles!


We had a huge pile of organic heirloom cucumbers that grew in our garden this year, so Jenn and I made an enormous batch of dill pickles, and the next day my mom and I made a batch of bread and butter pickles. We followed two great recipes from Pat Crocker's book Preserving...see more on her website here. The book is an enormous compendium of wonderful natural recipes for preserving in all seasons, and she lives nearby on the Saugeen river in Ontario, so it turns out that even our recipes were local!




While we were attacking the giant pile of cucumbers, another type of showdown was happening outside...
